Faleceu esta quinta-feira, 18 de Dezembro, em Luanda, Fernando Piedade dos Santos, antigo vice-Presidente da República de Angola durante o consulado de José Eduardo dos Santos. Conhecido por “Nandó”, tinha 75 anos. O óbito foi declarado na Clínica Girassol, às 12h47.
Segundo informações apuradas, Fernando Piedade dos Santos foi encontrado em casa sem sinais de vida, tendo as manobras de reanimação efectuadas revelado-se infrutíferas. Figura histórica do MPLA, Nandó vinha sendo apontado, nos últimos tempos, como um possível candidato à sucessão de João Lourenço na liderança do partido e, consequentemente, à Presidência da República. O seu nome surgiu como alternativa capaz de promover consenso interno, sobretudo após o anúncio da candidatura do general Higino Carneiro.Em Outubro deste ano, Fernando Piedade dos Santos voltou ao espaço público ao participar na 2.ª edição do Encontro Geracional – À Volta da Fogueira, realizado no CAP 99-Alvalade, em Luanda, iniciativa promovida por uma estrutura do MPLA. Na ocasião, apelou à unidade partidária e defendeu a necessidade de equilíbrio entre gerações na condução dos destinos políticos do país.
“É necessário haver coabitação entre gerações. Os mais velhos, pela experiência, devem ser respeitados; os mais novos, por sua vez, devem evitar a pressa e a sede de poder”, afirmou então o antigo dirigente, numa intervenção interpretada como um recado directo a sectores mais jovens do partido e como uma crítica à antecipação de algumas candidaturas.Noutra passagem, sublinhou que “a sucessão deve ser construída com humildade, disciplina e trabalho”, deixando implícita a defesa de um processo interno mais ponderado e consensual.
Nascido em Luanda, a 5 de Março de 1950, Fernando Piedade dos Santos licenciou-se em Direito, em 2009, pela Universidade Agostinho Neto. A sua militância no MPLA remonta a 1971, tendo ocupado ao longo da sua carreira vários cargos de relevo no aparelho do Estado.Foi comandante-geral da Polícia Nacional em 1982, ministro do Interior entre 1999 e 2002, primeiro-ministro, presidente da Assembleia Nacional e, posteriormente, vice-Presidente da República. Era primo do antigo Chefe de Estado José Eduardo dos Santos, falecido em Julho de 2022.Fernando Piedade dos Santos deixa sete filhos e um legado marcado pela longevidade política e pela influência nos principais momentos da história recente do país.
